THE PRE HORSE

HISTORY

While horses have been found on the Iberian Peninsula for thousands of years. The Purebred Spanish Horse was actually created by King Phillip II on the 28th November 1567 when he ordered a Royal Decree to purchase 1200 mares and the necessary stallions from around the Iberian Peninsula to create a new breed of horse. The horse he achieved was so extraordinary that it was not named ‘Andalusian’ but rather ‘Spanish’ to be used as an emblem of an empire and a culture that had achieved what everyone desired, the perfect horse.

This horse surpassed all original objectives for the project and contrary to the original Kings wishes, this new breed of horse was destined for exclusive use by the Royal Household as a gift or bargaining chip for other countries who wanted to use the magnificent Spanish stallions with their own mares. Thus horses were sent to many other countries who began their own breeds the Lusitano, Lippizan, Kladrub and many more…
